Scene of Edward Oxford's attempt to assassinate Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on the evening of Wednesday 10th June, 1840. Oxford was tried for high treason but acquitted on grounds of insanity. He was sent to Bethlem Hospital, where he remained until 1864, when the criminal patients were transferred to Broadmoor. In 1867 he was released on condition that
